The simple tool is a portable instrument developed for the screening of malnourished(wasted, stunted and over weight/obesed) children under 5 years old.
While the commonly used equipment such as the weighing scale, stadiometer, infantometer e.t.c show the present state of the child, the Growth Screening Wheel helps anyone (including rural women) interpret and appreciate the nutritional status of children. It gives a clear and instant mental picture of where that particular child is among the general population of his/her age group and where the child should be.
The Growth Screening Wheel can be used to assess children between birth and 6 months of age 5
The use of the weight-for-age and height-for-age tables and charts on the field may sometimes be cumbersome, clumsy, time consuming and require trained personnel to use them on the field; but the Growth Screening Wheel is portable, requires very minimal training and can be easily understood and used by mothers and ad hoc health and nutrition volunteers right there on the field thereby enhancing the sustainability of monitoring and evaluation endeavors for nutritional intervention initiatives along the food value chain.
The Growth Screening Wheel is a valuable tool for the nutritional surveys and will also be useful in clinics, schools and for home use thereby expanding the scope of screening for mal-nourished under 5 years old children.
The Growth Screening Wheel will be used for baseline, midline and final assessment of the nutritional status of the target population thereby enabling effective impact assessment of the project over the duration of the project cycle.
